Brief description of current research:
Dr. Janzen’s research focuses on studying ecology and evolution with (1) mechanistic work at the molecular and organismal levels, (2) field studies that document the importance of phenotypic variation, and (3) a comparative view of the long-term consequences of this variation. This research approach integrates molecular, genetic, and computational techniques with experimental laboratory and field studies. The externally funded research program explores the impact of environmental and genetic factors in mediating the expression of physiological, behavioral, and life-history traits, particularly (1) the biological significance of diverse sex-determining mechanisms (especially environmental sex determination) and (2) the current and historical genetic structure of populations and species, with an emphasis on elucidating adaptive processes and solving conservation concerns like those induced by ongoing climate change.
